Bob and Chuck Eddy FIAT brings a variety of Italian-designed FIAT vehicles to Youngstown, Ohio, including the FIAT-brand take on a crossover SUV, the FIAT 500X.

Smaller SUVs have gained a lot of popularity over the past few years. They're versatile and fun to take out on the road, but do away with the bulky chassis and off-road extremist features so often under-utilized by the majority of consumers. Two of the biggest contenders in the small SUV category this round are the FIAT 500X and the Mini Cooper Paceman.

The Mini Cooper Paceman is an even smaller version of the Mini Cooper Countryman with two doors instead of four, pushing it into the small SUV category alongside the FIAT 500X. The FIAT 500X is a unique crossover. It maintains the overall shape and style of the miniature FIAT 500, but extends the chassis to four doors and raises and widens the hatchback to give it that SUV feel.

Both models have received similarly positive reviews. Both have great handling, an interior packed with the latest technology, decent fuel economy, and a variety of trims that upgrade power. The FIAT 500X wins out when it comes to the engine, however. The standard 1.4L turbo four has a pleasurable 160 horsepower and comes with a cheaper price tag. It also manages to keep four doors, while the Mini Cooper Paceman drops down to two doors from the Countryman's four in order to reduce the size. With the convenience of four doors, a better base engine, and smaller price tag, we suggest the FIAT 500X over the Mini Cooper Paceman if you're shopping on the smaller end of the SUV market.
